Butler Houses
Butler Houses is named after Edmund
Borgia Butler (1896-1956), the 4th Chairman of NYCHA. Butler was an attorney who
was a vigorous and sometimes controversial supporter of low-cost public housing.
In particular, he fought for affordable housing for veterans during the housing
shortage following WW II. He was a full professor at Fordham University Law
School when he was appointed to NYCHA by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in 1942. He
resigned in 1947. Edmund Borgia Butler Houses is a Bronx development with six,
21-story buildings containing 1,476 apartments. Completed December 31, 1964, the
12.81-acre development extends from East 169th to East 171st Streets, from Park
to Webster Avenues. Edmund Borgia Butler Houses is home to 4,264 residents.
